[Inside VC3] Implementation Engineer/Technician: Turning New Tech into Downstream Success

VC3 Implementation Engineer

If you want to work with the latest technology, then you should set your sights on a job with the implementation team at VC3. Implementation Engineers and Technicians are the ones who figure out how best to build and roll out IT improvements for clients. Those who thrive in this role get a thrill from being some of the first to experience new technology, and that’s where the biggest challenges lie as well.

Flexibility in Crafting IT Solutions

Figuring out how to install technology into an existing IT system takes a lot of research, especially if it’s new. Every client’s IT environment has its own nuances so it’s not just a matter of plug and play. Consideration must be given to how the technology will interact with the rest of the IT systems and the people utilizing it, ensuring that the end result addresses the business problem that needs to be solved.

Implementation Engineers and Technicians have a lot of leeway in how they will go about building an IT solution. When the Implementation Team starts on a project, they begin with the 30,000-foot view of a solution that the Architecture Team has devised. There could be multiple ways to implement the technology but it’s up to the Engineer or Technician to determine the steps that will get them to the outcome that’s expected.

Remote Work with Autonomy and Collaboration

Most members of VC3’s Implementation Team work remotely, and Engineers and Technicians are strategically located according to client locations so they can occasionally perform onsite work. Most of the time, however, they’re working from their individual locations, head down doing what needs to be done without the need for micro-management. They manage their own schedule, dedicating each day to one or two of the several projects they have at any given time, while attending internal and client meetings as needed for each project.

The work of an Implementation Engineer or Technician is quite autonomous but that doesn’t mean they work alone. There is considerable collaboration among the team, allowing them to share knowledge and support each other with their combined expertise. They also work closely with Project Managers who act as the liaison to the client and make sure the team is on track with deliverables.

Pathways to the Implementation Team

The role of an Implementation Engineer or Technician requires advanced IT skills and knowledge. Some team members come from the Support Team after honing their troubleshooting skills and seek to elevate their expertise. Others transition from the Onboarding and Deployment Teams, bringing experience gained through hands-on work and IT systems documentation.

The training plan for a new engineer or technician depends on their previous experience. While there is training for specific products that VC3 offers, the ramp up process consists mostly of shadowing team members and following every aspect of a project from beginning to end.

Developing Expertise and Sharing Knowledge

Mentoring from fellow team members never really stops. No one can know everything, so the team makes sure that they don’t hoard knowledge but share it. At the same time, it’s possible to become a subject matter expert in a specific aspect of technology like networking or Microsoft 365.

Some people have used their project experience as a steppingstone to other roles in VC3 such as Enterprise Solutions, Architecture Design, Project Management or Client Strategy. However, many stay with the Implementation Team long term because they find fulfillment through the constant learning and variety of work that has such a huge impact on client and company success.

The Downstream Impact on Client and Company Success

Ensuring the product works as intended from the start makes everything downstream easier to support. When technology is implemented effectively, efficiently, and with thorough documentation, it results in fewer support tickets and reduces the workload for the Advanced Support and First Call Response Teams. It also allows clients to fully benefit from their improved capabilities so they can focus on running their organization.
